Down Memory Lane: When Mithun Chakraborty’s voice was stolen - The shocking deception behind Heeralal Pannalal
In the world of Bollywood, where glamorous tales of success often shine brightest, there are also stories of betrayal, deception, and disappointment. One such tale belongs to Mithun Chakraborty and his 1999 film Heeralal Pannalal. Directed and produced by Kawal Sharma, the film also starred Johnny Lever, Mohan Joshi, Shakti Kapoor, Asrani, and Deven Verma. What should have been a straightforward film release for the beloved actor turned into an episode of shock and outrage - one that left Mithun feeling duped and betrayed.
Down Memory Lane: When Mithun Chakraborty’s voice was stolen - The shocking deception behind Heeralal Pannalal
Mithun Chakraborty, a name synonymous with dedication and versatility, was eagerly awaiting the release of Heeralal Pannalal, where he starred in the lead role. But as the release date approached, Mithun discovered that he had been denied a fundamental part of his performance - his voice. The actor was stunned to learn that his character’s dialogues had been dubbed by someone else. Shockingly, Mithun had never even been informed of this decision, and the betrayal was as bitter as it was unexpected.
The man behind this unusual twist was Kawal Sharma, the film’s director as well as the producer. According to Mithun, Sharma had gone to great lengths to get him on board for the project. In a heartfelt appeal, Sharma had reportedly pleaded with Mithun to star in the film, even falling at the actor’s feet to convince him. “Kawal had pleaded that if I didn’t sign his film, he’d be on the streets,” Mithun recounted soon after the film’s release in an interview. This emotional appeal had moved the star, prompting him to sign on for Heeralal Pannalal, with Mithun even going as far as offering financial leniency to support the struggling director and producer.
However, unbeknownst to Mithun, Sharma had something else planned. While Mithun was under the impression that the film would release on October 29, he discovered that it was scheduled to hit theatres a week earlier on October 22. By then, the dubbing had already been completed by a different artist, leaving Mithun’s voice absent from his own performance.
In the same interview, Mithun revealed his disappointment, emphasizing that he would have gone above and beyond to support Sharma. “Had he told me that he didn’t have money for the dubbing, I would have even paid from my own pocket,” Mithun said, his frustration evident. Instead, Sharma’s decision to deceive him cut deeply, shaking his faith in the industry’s professional ethics.
The betrayal went beyond mere disappointment. For a dedicated actor like Mithun, being stripped of his voice was akin to being robbed of his identity on screen. This incident set a troubling precedent. Mithun feared that producers of his upcoming films, due for release in 1999 and 2000, might now demand assurances that he had indeed dubbed his own dialogues - something that should never have been questioned for an actor of his stature. In response, Mithun filed a complaint with the Cine & TV Artistes’ Association, seeking justice and hoping to protect other artists from similar mistreatment. “Such fraudulent producers should not be allowed to go scot-free,” he concluded, highlighting the importance of integrity in the film industry.
For Bollywood, this incident remains a striking example of how trust, once broken, can shake even the most seasoned stars. Decades later, Heeralal Pannalal is remembered not just as a film in Mithun Chakraborty’s repertoire but as a cautionary tale of loyalty, deception, and the unspoken bond between an actor and their art.
