Karan Johar quips “losing my Met virginity” as he debuts at Met Gala 2026; calls the event “crucial to the world of fashion”

Filmmaker Karan Johar offered a glimpse into his preparation for the Met Gala 2026, sharing his thoughts just before making his debut on the red carpet. In a candid interaction, Johar spoke about the significance of the event, his expectations for the evening, and his approach to fashion for the occasion.

Introducing the moment with a touch of humour, Johar said, “Hi Diet Sabya, join me as I lose my Met virginity.” He went on to emphasise that the Met Gala holds a deeper meaning beyond being a high-profile red carpet. “So Met Gala is much more than just, as I said, a red carpet or an event. It's something that I believe is very crucial and important to the world of fashion,” he said.

 

Johar described his presence at the event as a long-awaited milestone. “So obviously being on the red carpet for me has been like on my bucket list. And I love the fact that I'm here this year with this theme, a theme that I so, so resonate with in so many ways,” he added.

 

Speaking about his outfit, the filmmaker hinted at a look that aligns with the event’s artistic theme, while referencing popular culture. “I think Miranda Priestly in her own words would find my outfit. I don't know about her nod of approval, but I think she would definitely find it groundbreaking. And not in the way she describes florals in spring,” he said, alluding to the iconic fictional character from The Devil Wears Prada.

 

Johar also outlined his plans once the formal red carpet appearance concludes. “So once I'm inside, then I just want to eventually, after the glory of this beautiful garment is shown on the carpet, I would like to hang it in the troubleshooting room is what I believe it's called. Once I'm done with it, the inside is much more comfortable. Then I just want to hang out, meet people, have a drink and have a great time. That's my check,” he shared.

 

Known for his strong association with both cinema and fashion, Johar’s presence at the Met Gala 2026 marks another step in his engagement with global fashion platforms.
