Reflecting on cinema that beautifully captures wanderlust, Karan picked the Paris chapter of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani as a standout. “Ranbir was traversing through the city of Paris. I think we got a really strong lens into the city and there was a romanticisation of that already very romantic city, which I love,” he shared.

Reminiscing about his own filming experiences, Johar revealed that his most memorable outdoor shoot was in Egypt for the song Suraj Hua Maddham from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. “We shot against the pyramids, but that was the least exciting part. It’s when we went into the Farafra desert, where there were these beautiful white limestone formations — it was surreal,” he said.

When asked about his favourite food and stay experiences, the filmmaker confessed his obsession with Wagamama, particularly for its Katsu Curry. His go-to hotel remains The Four Seasons George Sanc in Paris, famed for its exquisite floral décor by Jeff Leatham. As for shopping, Karan playfully dodged the question, quipping, “Why should I recommend them? Then everybody will go there. Just go to Dubai Mall.”

The director also shared where he would have liked to film some of his iconic movies if given a chance:

  • Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham — Switzerland

  •

  • Ae Dil Hai Mushkil — Switzerland again

  •

  • Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani — “Nowhere else than where it was shot.”
