Karan Johar gets candid about loneliness, love and life as a single parent on Sania Mirza’s show: “I wanted love, I wanted companionship”

Sania asked Karan how he felt about not having a partner, to which he explained that he had reached a place of acceptance. “I was okay by now. There was a time when I really wanted love. I wanted companionship and a relationship. I went through many emotions—heartbreak, one-sided love—and I even made a film on it. That process was cathartic and helped me heal,” he said.

Karan shared that people often advised him to “put himself out there” or even “go abroad,” but he felt that such suggestions did not reflect his reality. “Go where? I lived here. I had a mom and two kids. My life was here. I went through those phases, and yes, I got lonely; that was the truth. You felt the loneliest during your highs, not your lows. Eating alone was another thing that made you feel lonely,” he added.

Although Karan said he had accepted being single, he also mentioned that he “never said never” when it came to finding love. In his signature humorous tone, he added that his “arms were wide open like Shah Rukh Khan’s” if love ever came his way. Reflecting on how he had told some of Bollywood’s most memorable love stories but did not have one of his own, he remarked, “Rab ne vo jodi mere liye nahi banayi (God hasn’t made a partner for me).”
