Imtiaz Ali RESPONDS to Tamasha's Ved labelled as “Bipolar”: “I am not qualified to even say…”
Imtiaz Ali, the director behind Tamasha, responded to recent criticisms about the portrayal of Ved Vardhan Sahni, played by Ranbir Kapoor, being labelled as “bipolar.” The film, known for its exploration of mental health complexities, has sparked discussions regarding the accuracy of Ved's characterization.
In a conversation with Film Companion, Imtiaz Ali addressed the criticism, stating, "As a film director, I am not capable of providing anyone with the text. I am not qualified to even say what falls under which category of mental health illness." He stated that his role is to bring forth stories of love and evoke emotions, leaving the clinical aspects to qualified professionals.
For the unversed, the film delves into the journey of self-discovery as Ved, trapped in a corporate life, seeks his true passion. Imtiaz's portrayal of Ved's mental state has faced scrutiny, with some accusing the director of romanticising mental health issues.
Despite initial commercial challenges, Tamasha garnered a devoted following, resonating with audiences who appreciated its nuanced exploration of human experiences. Ved's encounter with Tara Maheshwari, portrayed by Deepika Padukone, serves as a pivotal moment, allowing him to embrace his authentic self.
Coming back to Imtiaz Ali, he is currently awaiting the release of his upcoming project, Chamkila. The film, starring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra, is slated to stream exclusively on Netflix, however, the makers haven’t announced the release date as of now.
