EXPLOSIVE: Suneel Darshan reveals Andaaz 2's OTT rights are unsold: "I haven't been approached by any platform. Corporates focus on star…NO respect for filmmakers; if OTT existed in the 80s, corporates WOULDN'T have acquired Ram Teri Ganga Maili as well"

Andaaz 2’s trailer was launched with much fanfare on July 28 in Mumbai by director Suneel Darshan and actors Aayush Kumar, Aakaisha and Natasha Fernandez. The end slate of the trailer doesn’t mention the name of any OTT partner. Bollywood Hungama spoke about this aspect with Suneel Darshan during an exclusive interaction.

Suneel Darshan admitted, “Strangely, I haven’t been approached by anybody. Maybe since it’s a newcomer film, they are waiting. They will wait to see the final product and its outcome. It’s not that they don’t acquire such films. But then there is always a vested interest in such cases.”

 

Suneel Darshan further elaborated, “They are waiting to see the film’s performance, ignoring the filmmaker’s performance over the years. That’s the biggest problem with the corporate people. They focus on the star and want to know who the actor is. But then there have been films like Ram Teri Ganga Maili (1985) featuring a hero (Rajiv Kapoor) who hadn’t worked and he was paired opposite a new girl (Mandakini). The other girl (Divya Rana) wasn’t doing well either. Hence, if OTT existed then, corporates wouldn’t have acquired that film as well (laughs).”

 

The talk in the industry is that OTT rights of many films are lying unsold. The problem becomes manifold when the films are already in cinemas or out of theatres and are struggling to get a streaming partner. Suneel Darshan sighed, “There’s no respect for the filmmakers. The measure is the star and we need to change that if we want to make better cinema. With all respect to the stars and superstars, but the fact is that cinema never happened because of stars.”

 

Is Saiyaara a big example of the same? Suneel Darshan stated, “Saiyaara is a classic example. It’s the director who’s carrying the film and there’s a producer who’s responsible. They deserve their share of respect for sure.”
