EXCLUSIVE: Made In India writer Karan Vyas reveals, “Jim Sarbh shaved his head for REAL; the show has ZERO prosthetics”; sighs, “We wish Ratan Tata had seen the show…he would have been VERY happy”
Writer Karan Vyas is on a high, thanks to the response to his recently released web series, Made In India: A Titan Story. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, he opened up about working with the show’s lead actors, Jim Sarbh and Naseeruddin Shah.
Karan Vyas began by saying, “Actors like them make our work better. I don’t think any other actor would have done justice to their characters.”
When asked about Naseeruddin Shah, he replied, “I met him only 3-4 times during readings. He was quite a gentleman and soft-spoken. Mostly, our discussions revolved only around the show. I didn’t get the chance to speak to him one-on-one or hang out with him. On set, he was so much into character and focused that I did not want to disturb him.”
He continued, “But I remember that on the first day of the shoot, the way he walked in gave us goosebumps. It was the day we shot his cabin scenes. The cabin was designed exactly the way it was during JRD Tata’s time. It was recreated to the T. He sat on the chair, and that look was uncanny. We felt as if JRD had walked into the office.”
And what about Jim Sarbh? Karan Vyas revealed, “Jim was super-fun. There are four people because of whom the show happened. One is producer Sunil Bohra. Hum unki jitni taareef karenge, utna kam hai. He had the confidence and conviction in the story and hence bought the rights to the book. The second was Jim, who completely surrendered and made it clear that he was doing the show, come what may. His support was rock-solid. That’s why Jim is a darling, and without him, the show would not have happened. And lastly, Amogh Dusad and Anand Jain of Amazon MX Player. They greenlit the show and gave us full creative control and authority. They motivated us to make the best show possible.”
Karan added, “I was involved with Jim during the readings and also interacted with him on the first day of the shoot. We wondered if he should shave his head. Jim and I were on the same page, while everyone else was iffy. Jim said that he wanted to do it, and I agreed with him because when people Google Xerxes Desai, they’ll know how he looked. And if it hadn’t matched, people would have started questioning the authenticity of everything. He convinced everyone that he should shave his head.”
Karan Vyas also made it clear, “The show has zero prosthetics. Neither Naseer saab nor Jim used any prosthetics. Everything was real. Even Jim’s side hair colour is real. Naseer saab’s moustache and hairstyle are also real. The HMU team did quite a good job. In fact, everyone, from production design to costume to camera team, brought in their A-game.”
Ratan Tata passed away on October 9, 2024. When asked if he knew about the show or got a chance to see its rushes, Karan Vyas stated, “Mr Ratan Tata passed away while we were scripting. He had an idea about the show since the Tatas granted us NOC to use the name of Titan, logo, etc. It took a lot of convincing for us to get Tata and Titan on board for this show. It was while we were developing the fourth or fifth episode that we got the news that he was no more. I wish he had seen it. He would have been very happy as JRD was like his father figure. His half-brother, Noel Tata, saw the series and was very impressed.”
