EXCLUSIVE: Kartik Aaryan calls OG Bhool Bhulaiyaa “wholesome” psychological thriller, explains parts two and three changed it to horror comedy; adds audience drew comparison with Akshay Kumar after sequel released: “When people compare me with him, I only feel weird”

In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Kartik Aaryan shared his thoughts on his upcoming film Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, comparing it to the original movie and its sequel. Reflecting on the iconic first installment starring Akshay Kumar, Kartik spoke about how Bhool Bhulaiyaa stood apart as a psychological thriller, while the following films embraced horror-comedy.

Kartik revealed his fond memories of watching the original Bhool Bhulaiyaa several times on TV. "I have watched the film a lot of times on TV. It has a good repeat value. I still remember how Vidya ma’am scared everyone with her performance. It was actually very scary to watch, though it belongs to a psychological thriller. Its genre itself was different,” Kartik recalled. He emphasized that the tone of the original was more intense, with Vidya Balan's performance as Manjulika leaving a lasting impact on audiences.

Transition to Horror-Comedy in Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 and 3

Kartik discussed how the franchise shifted from psychological thriller to horror-comedy in the later installments. He shared, "Later, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 was changed into horror and comedy, and the same is repeated for the third part." He also highlighted the nostalgia surrounding the characters of the original film, particularly Akshay Kumar and Rajpal Yadav’s role as Chota Pandit.

"I remember Akshay Kumar sir’s performance, and Rajpal Yadav sir’s character Chota Pandit; for me, it’s a wholesome film. I have always enjoyed watching it again and again," Kartik added, showcasing his admiration for the original cast.

Addressing Comparisons with Akshay Kumar

Kartik also opened up about being compared to Akshay Kumar, who starred in the first Bhool Bhulaiyaa. He said, “I have been his big fan. I think I can’t see myself competing with him. When people compare me with him, I only feel weird. It started with Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2. Now, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 is coming, so it comes automatically in people’s minds. But I still say the comparison is not possible.”

Despite the comparisons, Kartik remains humble and optimistic, expressing his hope that he and Akshay could one day share the screen in a comedy film, which he believes would be "bahut acchi."
