Emraan Hashmi has addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding his recently released film Haq, which is inspired by the landmark 1985 Supreme Court case of Mohd. Ahmed Khan vs Shah Bano Begum. The actor, who stars alongside Yami Gautam in the Suparn S. Verma directorial, shared his perspective during a conversation with Bollywood Hungama.

EXCLUSIVE: Emraan Hashmi DEFENDS Haq amid Shah Bano’s family’s legal objection; says, “We have extrapolated certain things inspired from that case”

Responding to the objections raised by Shah Bano’s family, Hashmi said, “I really can’t comment on that as I don’t know the details about it, but all I can say is that I think we have been very sensitive to the overall issue. Like I said, we are not passing judgement or pointing a finger at a particular thing in this film on the case. We have extrapolated certain things inspired from that case. We have been very sensitive in the way we have documented it in the film. Again, it’s a sensitive thing, so I can’t really go beyond that.”

Earlier this week, Shah Bano’s grandson Jubair Ahmad Khan voiced strong objections to the film, claiming that it was made without the family’s consent and that the teaser “distorts” several facts related to their late grandmother’s life. “Anything that happens affects us as a family. They didn’t ask us anything,” he told ANI.

Additionally, Siddiqua Begum Khan, Shah Bano’s daughter and legal heir, has approached the Madhya Pradesh High Court seeking to restrain the release of Haq, alleging violation of privacy and misrepresentation.

Produced by Junglee Pictures, Haq released in theatres on November 7, 2025. The courtroom drama revisits themes of gender justice, faith, and personal freedom through a fictionalised lens inspired by one of India’s most debated legal cases.
