EXCLUSIVE: Chitrangda Singh reflects on OTT space, writing for women, and the rarity of meaningful female characters
In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, actor Chitrangda Singh shared her perspective on the kind of roles being written for women on OTT platforms and whether the digital space is truly creating room for layered female characters.
EXCLUSIVE: Chitrangda Singh reflects on OTT space, writing for women, and the rarity of meaningful female characters
Speaking about her recent experience, Chitrangda said that roles written with such depth and narrative importance were still rare. “I’ve been saying this in all my interviews — it’s very rare to come across a role that is written like this, one that is so pivotal and interesting,” she said. She added that what made the character stand out was the fact that it was not written as a gender-specific part. “It could have been anybody. It’s written in that way, which makes it even more special.”
The actor acknowledged that OTT platforms had undeniably expanded storytelling opportunities and encouraged experimentation. According to her, there was a significant amount of content being written today, which in itself was a positive sign. “OTT is definitely writing. There’s a lot of material being created, and that is very encouraging,” she noted.
However, Chitrangda pointed out that writing driven by deep emotional investment and thoughtful character development was still uncommon. She credited director Honey Trehan for his immersive approach to filmmaking, saying he was deeply connected to every element of his project. “Honey is in love with his characters, the actors he works with, the story, the locations — he’s in love with everything. Getting to work with someone like him is a privilege, and it doesn’t come that often,” she shared.
Reflecting on the experience, the actor admitted that it had been a long time since she had enjoyed a creative process so thoroughly. “I honestly don’t remember the last time I enjoyed working this much,” she said, underscoring how fulfilling the journey had been for her as an actor.
While acknowledging that the OTT space was gradually improving when it came to writing for women, Chitrangda described the shift as promising. She concluded by saying that although progress was being made, roles written with genuine depth, sensitivity, and strong narrative purpose were still rare — making them all the more meaningful when they did come along.
