Emraan Hashmi reflects on calling Aishwarya Rai "Plastic" on Koffee With Karan: "I had to bear the brunt for it"

In an interview with Bollywood Bubble, Hashmi discussed his character in "Showtime," known for his blunt honesty, and drew a parallel to the KWK incident. "I am playing a fictional character here who calls a spade a spade," he said. "Talking about that Koffee With Karan show you mentioned, well, I had to bear the brunt for it for quite some time for really calling a spade a spade."

Hashmi recounted the specific moment, revealing that Johar initially cut the shot due to the unexpected answer. "When that rapid-fire round happened, Karan had cut the shot," he shared. "He just looked around on the set, and everyone was dumbfounded. He asked, 'Can you actually keep this (Emraan's answer)?' And a couple of people behind the camera said 'Yes.'"

For the unversed, Hashmi's comment, labeling Rai "plastic" during the show's rapid-fire round, sparked significant controversy in 2014. The remark, intended as a playful response within the show's format, was widely interpreted as an insensitive and derogatory jab at Rai's appearance.

Speaking of his upcoming show, created by Sumit Roy, the showrunner is Mihir Desai who has also directed the show along with Archit Kumar. The screenplay is written by Sumit Roy, Mithun Gangopadhyay and Lara Chandni while the dialogues are written by Jehan Handa and Karan Shrikant Sharma. Showtime will be released on March 8, 2024, only on Disney+ Hotstar. Besides Emraan, it also stars Mouni Roy, Shriya Saran, Mahima Makwana and Rajiv Khandelwal.
