Editor of Satya Apurva Asrani on watching the gangster drama with the audience after 27 years, "I feared that a younger audience may not relate to the Mumbai of the 90s"

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma’s classic gangster saga Satya has been re-released recently. The film was edited by Apurva Asrani, who is also a writer and director. He recently saw Satya with an audience and shared his experience in an interview with us.

27 years of the gangster classic that made many careers, including yours

 

I saw it on Friday night with an audience that was either just born or were toddlers when the film first released. And they were as blown away as when we first screened it in 1998. The experience was surreal.

 

Were you keen to watch it with the audience?

 

To be honest, I was a bit nervous to watch the film last night. I feared that a younger audience may not relate to the Mumbai of the 90s, or to the pitch of the performances, to the songs, to the length of the film (it’s 2:50 minutes), one of my longest film edits.

 

Were your fears unfounded?

 

I was pleasantly surprised by the response. They were so emotionally invested in the storytelling and the characters that it seemed like the runtime felt short.

 

If you had the opportunity to re-edit Satya, would you make changes, for example the songs?

 

I wouldn’t change a thing. Everything is in perfect rhythm and sync. The film was the result of a fantastic team passionately living, eating, breathing this project. How often does that happen? But I guess the way we treat songs today has changed, so I’d probably try to convince Ramuji to cut out a couple of the songs. I tried to do that 27 years ago too, but luckily he didn’t listen.
