Netflix India delivered a proud moment on the global stage as Amar Singh Chamkila earned two major nominations at the 53rd International Emmy Awards held in New York. The biographical drama — which premiered on Netflix on April 12, 2024 — stands tall as the only Indian title shortlisted this year, spotlighting the increasing global resonance of authentic Indian stories.

Diljit Dosanjh, nominated in the category of Best Performance by an Actor, arrived on the red carpet alongside filmmaker Imtiaz Ali, whose direction and screenplay brought the turbulent life of Punjabi folk sensation Amar Singh Chamkila to the screen with depth and sensitivity. Joining them were producer Mohit Choudhary, Monika Shergill (Vice President, Content, Netflix India), and Ruchikaa Kapoor Sheikh (Director, Original Films, Netflix India), representing the streamer’s growing global footprint.

 

The film, released to widespread acclaim, explores the life and legacy of Amar Singh Chamkila, the controversial yet wildly beloved Punjabi musician who was assassinated at the age of 27 along with his second wife and singing partner, Amarjot Kaur. Diljit Dosanjh leads the film as Chamkila, with Parineeti Chopra portraying Amarjot. Their portrayal captures the meteoric rise of the duo, known for their bold and socially charged lyrics that dominated the Punjabi music scene in the 1980s despite ongoing criticism and repeated threats.

 

 

Adding to the film’s authenticity, the music — composed by A. R. Rahman — features live vocals by both Diljit and Parineeti, a creative choice that elevated its raw, emotional tone. This musical dimension has been widely credited for bringing audiences closer to the essence of Chamkila’s artistry.

 

As the Netflix India team walked the International Emmy red carpet, their presence reaffirmed the platform’s commitment to championing local narratives with universal appeal.
