Deepika Padukone recalls breaking down in front of her mother amid depression: “Mujhe jeena hi nahi hai ab”
During the Pariksha Pe Charcha 2025 session, available on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s YouTube channel, Deepika Padukone shared how she first realized she had depression. She recalled being busy with sports, modelling, and acting after school, constantly working without pause. However, in 2014, she experienced a moment where she passed out, and a few days later, she was diagnosed with depression.
Deepika Padukone highlighted that depression is an invisible struggle, noting that people around us might be battling it while still wearing a smile. She emphasized the importance of awareness and understanding, as mental health issues often go unnoticed.
Deepika Padukone shared that she kept her struggles with depression to herself for a long time as she was living alone in Mumbai. It was only when her mother visited her and was about to return to Bengaluru that Deepika finally broke down, revealing her emotional turmoil.
Her mother questioned her about what happened, and Deepika disclosed that she responded, “I don’t know what this is. I’m just feeling completely helpless and hopeless. Mujhe jeena hi nahi hai ab.”
She considered herself 'fortunate' that her mother recognized her struggle and chose to consult a psychologist. Deepika emphasized the importance of discussing mental health issues, as it helps lighten the emotional load.
On February 11, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Deepika Padukone’s dedication to mental health. Sharing a message on his Instagram Story, he wrote, “Among the most common topics #Exam Warriors want to discuss is mental health and wellbeing. Therefore, this year's Pariksha Pe Charcha has an episode specially dedicated to this topic which will play tomorrow, 12th February.”
The PM added, “And we have @deepikapadukone, who is very passionate about this subject, talking about it.”
