Babylon Teaser: Brad Pitt gets drunk; Margot Robbie snorts cocaine in 1920s Hollywood story from Damien Chazelle
The first teaser of Babylon from Academy Award winner Damien Chazelle is here and it is eccentric. The filmmaker hopes to capture 1920s Hollywood's most glamorous and animalistic moments. The first teaser lives up to the expectations.
The teaser opens with Margot Robbie snorting cocaine and hoping to live life to the fullest as newcomer Manny Torres, dreams of making it big in the industry. Brad Pitt plays an actor who is drunk and pretty much doing crazy stuff.
"It was about capturing the spirit of that time, which is a lot more Wild West than we often imagine in our conceptions of the Roaring Twenties," said Chazelle at Toronto International Film Festival 2022. "There was more excess, more drugs, more extreme living on all ends of the spectrum than I think a lot of people even realize."
"You've got people here who are building an industry from scratch," continued Chazelle, who wrote Babylon's original screenplay. "First of all, they're building a city where it's illogical to have a city. It's right there in the desert — this dusty cow-town that's very pastoral and bucolic and rural. Then, a few things happen, one of which is the movies. And the town turns into megalopolis. That happens during the '20s."
From Damien Chazelle, Babylon is an original epic set in 1920s Los Angeles led by Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie and Diego Calva, with an ensemble cast including Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li and Jean Smart. A tale of outsized ambition and outrageous excess, it traces the rise and fall of multiple characters during an era of unbridled decadence and depravity in early Hollywood.
