Avinash Tiwary opens up on his 15-year struggle: “I worked for years on Laila Majnu, it got removed from theatres within three days”

Last year, Avinash Tiwary’s 2018 film Laila Majnu found renewed success with its theatrical re-release, bringing him the audience appreciation he had long awaited. In a recent interview, he reflected on his 15-year struggle to secure the role. However, when the film initially underperformed at the box office, he realized his battle in the industry was far from over and that he had to keep fighting for his place.

In an interview with Hollywood Reporter India, Avinash Tiwary shared that, growing up in a family that valued education, he chose to study acting. He said, “I took up acting as an education and went to New York to train myself. I came back, and I thought I was ready for it. After a degree, kaam milta hai. And this was in 2007—I thought there would be a red carpet for me, but nobody turned up. I didn’t even know where to go.”

 

Avinash revealed that he avoided leaving his photos or portfolios at studios, knowing they would likely be discarded. “People would have portfolios in New York, and they would be thrown in trash cans for some reason. So, I used to make DVDs and go to Famous Studios to show them how I look on screen. Films were what I wanted to do, but they seemed so far away,” he added.

 

After 15 years of struggle, Avinash finally landed Laila Majnu, but the experience didn’t go as expected. He stated, “It took me 15 years to get that one film. I was exhausted because I didn’t know what to do after this. I worked for three years on the film, and it got removed from theatres within three days. I didn’t know what to do. ‘Should I try for one more film?’ This is when you realize this is a game.”
