align="right"/> There was more than a year's gap between Kahaani and Ghanchakkar. Now within 12 months, Vidya Balan is seeing her third release Bobby Jasoos with Shaadi Ke Side Effects arriving earlier this year. This time around, she has a central role to play in the film and for those who had been waiting to see her in an avtar like this after Kahaani and The Dirty Picture where she led from the front, the wait is over.

For someone like who picks and chooses her films quite selectively, there must have been something special about Bobby Jasoos that you said 'yes' to it.

There is a human element story in there and I connected with it. Somewhere we all want the underdogs to triumph, and Bobby is as underdog a person as you can meet. I got it all straight when Dia (Mirza) and Sahil (Sangha) came home with Samar (Shaikh) and Sankyuta (Chawla) to give a five line introduction of the film. I liked the fact that Bobby comes from a lower middle class family in Hyderabad whose aspiration is to be the best 'jasoos' in her 'mohalla'. She is not a trained 'jasoos' but still dreams big. She has her feelings and limitations but then she is a go getter. She is charming, street smart and very real.

Apparently, this is one of your few films for which you gave a nod of approval instantly; though in your case even an instant means a one month time period at least!

(Laughs) Yeah, for me that was indeed instant. Still, even when I was on board, I wanted to spend enough time with Samar and Sankyuta because for me it is very important to know that what's their real inspiration for the character Bobby and which world does she belong to. I also wanted to develop a relationship of trust with Samar as he is the director and for me it is very crucial to be on the same wavelength as the man calling the shots. I spend a lot of time with him to get all questions cleared. That helps because tomorrow if he wants me to roll out on the floor, I should be able to do it unquestionably.

You seem to be really enjoying the show though and letting your hair down in the film.

Yeah, because the character is so endearing! It is nothing like I have played before. I like the fact that Bobby can feel happy about such small things in life. So if you see that poster in which I am holding the torch, my facial expression says it all. I have this look which says, 'Oh my God, look at what I have just discovered'. And because of the kind of girl that she is and the background that she comes from, she is vibrant, funky, independent and a lot of fun.

As an independent actress though who is setting her own rules, how has the journey been towards Bobby Jasoos?

See, our industry is taking baby steps in moving ahead when it comes to female centric film. Within what we understand of female centric films, it is only now when we are making films belonging to this genre. They are also not being hardcore issue based films with 'rona dhona' and all. A woman can be happy, vibrant and full of energy, and still lead the show in a film.

This time around, there seem to be 12 of you leading the show though!

That's right; I get to play these 12 different characters within one film. The disguises are completely different from each other; they are all interesting and fun. I am thankful to the people involved that I got an opportunity to do a film like this. For me as an actor, with every role I am trying to live a different person's life. In fact I even love the plain and simple Bobby look that I am bearing. Being in 'salwar-kameez' is something else and my costume designer did well in pinning my 'dupatta' as I am constantly on the run. Also, I wear canvas shoes as I have to be agile. So there is a nice mix of femininity and practicality in there.

And I guess some adventure too? After all, you must have been able to unleash the 'jasoos' in you after preparing and then shooting for the film.

(Laughs) You don't need to play a detective role to get that 'keeda' because as humans we are all interested in each other's lives. Especially as a woman, you are always interested in other people out there. That 'jasoosi ka keeda' has always been there in me and Bobby Jasoos has only allowed me to bring that aspect on screen now.
