Anurag Kashyap reveals he had “MASSIVE implosion” and heart attack after Maximum City was shelved: “No one had the courage to tell me I should stop wasting time; my first question was, ‘Have you read the book?’. They all said ‘Yes’. But nobody had read the book”

Anurag Kashyap had a fascinating conversation with Mayank Shekhar of Mid-Day about his journey, Kennedy, setbacks etc. The reputed filmmaker opened up about how he got the shock of his life when his web series based on Suketu Mehta’s iconic book, Maximum City, was shelved.

Anurag began by saying, “The lockdown happened and I was writing Maximum City. They (the streaming platform) had decided that ‘Yaar, yeh bana nahin sakte. Bahut mushkil ho jaayega’. But no one had the courage to tell me that I should stop working and stop wasting my time. I kept writing and writing. Also, I don’t type. I hand-write. I spent too much time on it. My whole team knew about it. They were informed about it. However, no one came and told me. Imagine I gave 2 years to it and was emotionally so attached to it. Hence, I had a massive implosion.”

 

Anurag revealed, “I started working on it after it was greenlit. My first question to everybody at Netflix was, ‘Have you read the book?’. They all said ‘Yes’. But nobody had read the book. I am saying that it started with a lie. They greenlit it and they gave basic money for prep as well. My script was very authentic to the book. And after reading the script, they told me, ‘Yaar, yeh nahin ho paayega’. That was the time when I saw Netflix as my home. I did Sacred Games, Lust Stories, Choked, Ghost Stories and AK vs AK for them. So, when they greenlit it, I knew that they wanted to make a show. But the way things unfolded, I literally had a massive implosion.”

 

Anurag continued, “The first thing I got was a heart attack. I got a stent. I was put on blood thinners. I could not deal with it. I reacted badly to the vaccines. I developed severe asthma and hence, I was put on steroids, because of which I couldn’t calm down. As a result, I started drinking. It was a combination of so many things.”
