Like any other year, 2023 was a roller-coaster ride filled with some significant, pleasantly surprising as well as astonishing events that took place and the manner in which some films performed at the box office. In a bid to understand this tumultuous and exciting year, we at Bollywood Hungama, on a lighter note, decided to redevelop the English alphabets from A-Z keeping in mind the important events of the year

A – Animal


 


 

The Ranbir Kapoor starrer broke several myths and is unstoppable, even after the release of Dunki and Salaar.

 

 

 

B – BOGO


 


 

The Buy-One-Get-One ticket offer was implemented for Zara Hatke Zara Bachke, and that too for limited patrons. It caught on and was later adopted by several other filmmakers. In some cases, the effort proved futile.

 

 

 

C – CBFC


 


 

On the one hand, the Central Board of Film Certification imposed reckless cuts in Deepika Padukone’s ‘side pose’ scene in Pathaan and on the word ‘bra’ in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. On the other hand, they were liberal in passing Adipurush and the controversial Bhagavad Gita scene in Oppenheimer, leading to controversies.

 

 

 

D – Deepfake


 


 

The Rashmika Mandanna video became a national talking point as it made us realize the dangers of modern times.

 

 

 

E – (Sex) Education


 


 

OMG 2 highlighted the importance of it. Sadly, the ones it was meant for – teenagers – couldn’t see it in cinemas.

 

 

 

F – Five Hundred Crores


 


 

Bollywood jumped from Rs. 300 crore club to Rs. 500 crore club, thanks to Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan and Jawan and Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2.

 

 

 

G – Greta Gerwig, Christopher Nolan


 


 

These two filmmakers directed Barbie and Oppenheimer respectively and it rocked the global box office. India was no exception, where both films collectively accumulated nearly Rs. 175 crores.

 

 

 

H – Heart Attack


 


 

The news of Shreyas Talpade’s illness sent shockwaves.

 

 

 

I – Iranian song in Animal


 


 

It has created such a rage on Instagram reels that soon, people are going to get fed up with it.

 

 

 

J – Jalegi Bhi Tere Baap Ki


 


 

The controversial dialogue in Adipurush got a historic backlash. The makers quickly changed the line to avoid further embarrassment.

 

 

 

K – (The) Kerala Story


 


 

The controversial film got polarized reactions. The makers, however, laughed all the way to the bank as it collected Rs. 242.20 crores

 

 

 

L – Lipstick


 


 

Ranbir Kapoor was massively trolled after Alia Bhatt revealed that her hubby would tell her to wipe off her lipstick.

 

 

 

M – Multiplexes and single-screens


 



 

The cinema halls suffered immensely from 2020 to 2022 but in 2023, the revenue went on a record high.

 

 

 

N – Naatu Naatu, Naiyo Lagda


 


 

These two songs dominated the first half of the year. RRR’s track won the Best Original Song award at the 95th Academy Awards. The melodious song of Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan was a true blue chartbuster.

 

 

 

O – Organic, Orry


 


 

The former boiled the blood of some fans while others used it excessively to further their agenda on social media. The latter became a household name, with many wondering what does he do in life.

 

 

 

P – Pathaan bikini row


 


 

The most needless and laughable controversy of the year.

 

 

 

Q – Quiet a year for Deols


 


 

Sunny Deol entered into the Rs. 500 crore club with Gadar 2. Bobby Deol rocked the show with his 15-minute appearance in Animal. Dharmendra, meanwhile, won hearts with his performance in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.

 

 

 

R – Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani


 


 

The Karan Johar directorial was a massive success and was loved for its plot, performances, music, grandeur and most importantly, progressive theme.

 

 

 

S – Shah Rukh Khan


 


 

The superstar made such a stunning comeback that his critics didn’t know where to hide their faces.

 

 

 

T – The Archies


 


 

The Netflix original and the launch pad of several star kids released with a lot of hype and ended up with a mixed word of mouth.

 

 

 

U – Urban films


 


 

Another myth broken this year is that this kind of films can work in cinemas too. Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway, Zara Hatke Zara Bachke, OMG 2, 12th Fail etc. were dubbed as ‘OTT films’ and yet, worked in cinemas.

 

 

 

V – Vimal


 


 

The pan masala brand continued to make news this year as well.

 

 

 

W – Wamiqa Gabbi


 


 

She had the best year of her professional life and proved that she’s one of the greatest actresses today.

 

 

 

X – e(X)treme reaction to Koffee With Karan’s first episode


 


 

Deepika Padukone was criticized for her statements about her relationship with Ranveer Singh.

 

 

 

Y – Yash Raj Films


 


 

After a terrible 2022, the esteemed production house jumped back into the big league with Pathaan.

 

 

 

Z – Zee Studios, Zara Hatke Zara Bachke


 


 

The reputed banner was appreciated for backing Gadar 2 on one hand and 12th Fail and Joram on the other. Zara Hatke Zara Bachke’s super success spread jubilation as it was a rare mid-sized film to cross the Rs. 75 crores mark after the pandemic.
