Actor Varun Dhawan has spoken about his approach to balancing comedy and drama in his career, noting that his next project will mark a significant shift from his recent work. The comments came around the release of Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, directed by David Dhawan and currently playing in theatres.
“I love comedy and I appreciate anyone who can make me laugh. Yes, serious cinema should be made. In fact, after Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, I’ll be doing a film which is very different. But it is important to have laughter in our lives,” said Dhawan.
Dhawan has navigated a range of genres across his career, with credits spanning Main Tera Hero, Badlapur, and Bhediya. Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai marks his return to the rom-com space under David Dhawan’s direction, with the film drawing its title inspiration from the song ‘Hai Jawwani Toh Ishq Hona Hai’ from the 1999 film Biwi No. 1, also directed by David Dhawan.
Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai stars Varun Dhawan alongside Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde in the lead roles, with a supporting ensemble that includes Maniesh Paul, Jimmy Sheirgill, Mouni Roy, Chunky Panday, Kubbra Sait, and Johny Lever. Directed by David Dhawan, the film's story and screenplay are written by Yunus Sajawal with dialogues by Farhad Samji, and it was released in theatres on June 5, 2026.
