The box office has been booming since the release of Dhurandhar The Revenge and one film that has truly surprised the trade in recent times is Michael. The film arrived in cinemas on April 24 amid uncertainty – the advance booking was strong, but the reviews in the West were discouraging. Hence, there was a fear that the biopic will fall or even crash after the initial euphoria would subside. However, Michael has been rock steady ever since its release. Surprisingly, it is the top-performing film in the weekdays in PVR Inox chain, beating new releases like Krishnavataram Part 1: The Heart and even films that came after Michael, like Raja Shivaji and The Devil Wears Prada 2.

On Wednesday, May 13, the day after the Tuesday offer, Michael grossed Rs. 70.80 lakhs in PVR Inox. On number 2 was Krishnavataram Part 1: The Heart, which accumulated Rs. 69.49 lakhs. Bhooth Bangla usurped the third slot, collecting Rs. 49.63 lakhs. Raja Shivaji’s Marathi version collected Rs. 43.28 lakhs and came fourth. The Devil Wears Prada 2 was not far behind, as it collected Rs. 41.98 lakhs. It was followed by films like Daadi Ki Shaadi (Rs. 25.49 lakhs), Mortal Kombat II (Rs. 23.02 lakhs), Dhurandhar The Revenge (Rs. 20.89 lakhs) and Raja Shivaji’s Hindi version (Rs. 18.27 lakhs).

In short, Michael continues to do remarkably well despite being in its third week and despite facing competition from new releases. At this rate, it is expected to hang around in cinemas for many more weeks. As of May 13, it has collected Rs. 52.95 crores and if it continues to remain steady, it will have a lifetime of Rs. 65-70 crores or even more. For a film that has only been released in the English version, this is a huge achievement.

Michael is based on the life of Michael Jackson. The late pop icon’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson, essays the lead role in the Antoine Fuqua-directorial.
