Mohan Kapur recently shared his thoughts on the response to Akshaye Khanna’s performance in Dhurandhar, comparing the audience’s excitement around the actor to “having biryani after a long time.” During a conversation with Siddharth Kannan, Mohan Kapur praised Akshaye Khanna’s acting abilities and reflected on why audiences reacted so strongly to his appearance in the film.
“You are right. Akshaye Khanna has always been a very good performer. He’s a brilliant actor,” Mohan said. He also spoke about the actor’s selective film choices over the years and how that may have contributed to the renewed excitement among viewers.
“I don’t know him personally, so I can’t say for sure, but people often say that he’s moody or selective. Maybe he is moody, maybe he didn’t like the scripts that were offered to him, or maybe he simply wanted to take breaks and work on his own terms,” he added.
Mohan further suggested that some actors prefer to return only when they find projects that genuinely interest them. “Maybe he was on that kind of sabbatical where he felt, ‘I’ll come back when I feel like it and when I find something worth doing.’ Or maybe it’s just destiny. Sometimes your stars align later. But one thing is certain, he has always been a great actor,” he stated.
Speaking about Dhurandhar, Mohan Kapur described the film as an engaging and intelligently written project. “I watched it alone, and when I came out of the theatre, I understood why people were praising it so much. Everyone in the film did a phenomenal job. It’s an extremely intelligent piece of storytelling,” he said.
According to Mohan, part of the film’s impact comes from the way it blends fictional elements with references inspired by real-life events. “It has its critics and admirers, and that’s because it’s very smartly written. They’ve taken real-life instances and woven them into a clever fictional plot that makes people think it’s real,” he explained.
Returning to Akshaye Khanna’s performance, Mohan said the actor’s impact was amplified because audiences had not seen him in such a role for a long time. “He was phenomenal in the film, but honestly, that’s just Akshaye Khanna. He has always been that good. People are suddenly excited because they saw him in an avatar they had never seen before,” he noted.
Using a food analogy to explain the audience reaction, Mohan added, “If you eat biryani every single day, after a point, the excitement fades. But if you have it after a long gap, suddenly it feels amazing again. That’s what happened with Akshaye Khanna. Audiences hadn’t seen him in a long time, so it became a huge moment.”
