Actor Sanskruti Jayana is getting rave reviews for her act as Satyabhama in Hardik Gajjar’s spiritual entertainer Krishnavataram Part 1: The Heart. Adapted from Raam Mori’s Gujarati book ‘Satyabhama’, the film tells the story of Lord Krishna’s relation with Satyabhama, Radha and Rukmini. In an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama, Sanskruti spoke about her preparation, what is means to be the granddaughter of the veteran political figure Anandiben Patel and the status of the film’s sequel.
Who initially thought of adapting the book ‘Satyabhama’ into this film?
As much as I know – the makers would know better – the book’s author Raam Mori and our director Hardik Gajjar had this thought. It was a privilege that Prakash Kapadia sir got involved with the screenplay and writing. This is how it got started. I asked him why did he thought of showing Krishna’s story from the perspective of Satyabhama. He said it’s a very relatable topic because Satyabhama is like a girl of today; she feels every emotion. He wanted to keep a point of view of how she transforms and evolves into another person because of Krishna, so that today’s youth can connect with it.
You played the role of someone who goes through a lot of emotions in your first film itself. How did you prepare for the character of Satyabhama?
As this was my first film, it was very exciting for me that I got to play the character of Satyabhama. As an actor I got to do so much – I did action, dance and went through an emotional journey. I read a lot of books, of course. Along with the book ‘Satyabhama’, I read our Puranas, Geet Govind and other material. But at the same time, I also spent a lot of time with the writers and director to know their vision of Satyabhama. I definitely knew after reading that script, if I don’t fall in love with Krishna and if Sanskruti’s heart doesn’t have the same intense love for him as Satyabhama, that love won’t be visible in my eyes.
My main journey was to take myself near Krishna through reading about him and Satyabhama and how they see love. I also went to places like Dwarka. I heard a lot of podcasts to see how the world perceives Krishna. So, for me, the journey was to get closer to Krishna because Satyabhama’s journey is all about Krishna. That was the only preparation I thought I needed.
Were you a devout Krishna follower before working on this film?
We worship Lord Krishna at home as we are Gujaratis. We always say ‘Jai Shree Krishna’ while leaving home. His values and Gita Saar are an important part of our lives. But I wasn’t a very big Krishna devotee. I used to worship Bappa. But after doing this film, I can say I am completely a Krishna Bhakt. Lord Krishna is such that the more you read and learn about him, the more you will be near him.
Siddharth Gupta has played Lord Krishna in the film. How was your experience with him? You have a lot of scenes with him
The first time I saw Siddharth in costume and the way he was walking, we felt he is only Krishna. His eyes have that stillness, which connected us instantly and we felt he is the perfect person to play Krishna. I have seen his journey – the way he started and where he is now. He is a different person. Genuinely, he has brought a lot of Krishna’s values in his real life. It was such a delight. I am very new to the industry and he has been in Bombay for quite some time. He knows how the industry works. So, he was a guiding light for me as well. He has given me a lot of support in this journey.
Krishnavataram has these grand and colourful sets that are mostly seen only in those huge budget films
This is our director Hardik Gajjar’s vison. He has given six years of his life to make this film. When I met him for the first time, I went in a room, which was full of visuals. He had already visualized how his set would look, the colour of curtains, what jewellery the characters would wear, the kind of flowers to be used, etc. Our writers Raam Mori and Prakash Kapadia had shown this whole world in the screenplay. And I have seen the hardwork of our art directors Chokkas Bhaardwaj and Meera Bhaardwaj. They used to be on the set 24 hours in the heat. They have created even little details with such hardwork and love.
We had recreated Vrindavan in Film City and Naigaon and Dwarka in Visnagar, Gujarat. So, we never used to say that we are going to the set; we used to say we are going to Dwarka. As actors and Krishna devotees, it was a very surreal feeling for us to be standing there. So, it became easy for us to perform as we were able to feel that place and environment. Yesterday, I was doing an interview where the person said that they were able to smell the flowers while watching the film. That’s a win for the makers.
When did you feel that you should become an actor? Were you always interested in acting?
No, I wasn’t interested in acting since before. As I am a Gujarati, business is something that comes naturally to us. I started my own businesses when I was 16 years old. I come from a family of legacy, so I always wanted to do something in which I can create my own identity. I started with business. I then went to London to study fashion designing. While I was studying in London, I felt storytelling is something that influences me a lot whenever I listen to someone’s story and journey. I also write poetry. That made me feel that I want to explore the world of storytelling.
So, I took a filmmaking course. But soon I realized that I am more excited to be in front of the camera. I did a lot of courses. I went to RADA in London. Then I went to New York to study production full time. I went to New York Academy. I studied method acting in Lee Starsberg Institute. I started feeling this is such a good space where you can make someone feel something. When I realized that, I felt this is something I would love to do.
Your maternal grandmother is Anandiben Patel, who is the former Chief Minister of Gujarat and currently the Governor of Uttar Pradesh. What is her reaction to your profession?
In our family, everyone is in different fields and they all excel in their respective fields. My grandmother, as you know, is the first women Chief Minister of Gujarat and my mother is a social worker and social entrepreneur. My father is a public servant. My grandfather was a Padma Shri in the field of sanitation. Hence, I always wanted to make an identity for myself. There has always been a freedom in my family on what profession one should choose. I was never stopped from doing anything.
My naani was concerned about my journey as she used to call daily. I always wanted to make it on my own. So, she never made a single call for me or fixed my meeting with anyone. She says that my struggle will be my own. But I had a lot of emotional support from her. Today, she feels very proud. She is also happy that I started off by a film on Lord Krishna, so that I have a small contribution in taking our history and culture ahead. She couldn’t speak anything 10 minutes after the film ended; she was that emotional. I think she got overwhelmed with the story of Satyabhama and Krishna.
After playing Satyabhama in this devotional film, what kind of roles would you be interested in playing in the future?
As I said, I have trained a lot in acting. So, it’s my genuine wish that I get to do all types of characters and to explore myself in many different ways. I am very open to doing everything. But, of course, due to the legacy I come from and the start that I have made through the story of Krishna and Satyabhama, I know it is my responsibility to not do anything that harms India’s culture, values and ethics. I wish to do responsible and meaningful work, so that I can give back something to the country as a citizen.
When is Krishnavataram Part 2 coming? What is its status?
Honestly, we don’t have much idea as actors. The producers have a better idea on what the vision is. We also got to know much later that the film will be made in three parts. Of course, you can’t show Lord Krishna’s life in one film; even 100 films are less. Hopefully, the second part should come soon because the writing has gone under way.
