Speaking about the shift over the past decade, Malhotra said, “I think in the last ten years, since 2014, I would say that, you know, since Prime Minister Modi really took charge, I think one of the things he did very specifically in really uplifting our profile in the West and that has really helped put us at a point today where we are not looked upon in the same way we were two decades ago when I started. But I still think there's a lot more distance to travel. And I feel like, you know, I personally represent an industry that has over a hundred years of history and legacy, and we've never really been able to make a mark on that side.”

Malhotra, who is currently backing the ambitious mythological epic Ramayana, emphasized that while progress has been made, Indian cinema still has untapped potential on the global stage.

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari and written by Shridhar Raghavan, Ramayana is based on one of the most revered epics of Hinduism. The film is being developed as a two-part cinematic saga, aiming to blend scale, storytelling, and cutting-edge technology.

The project boasts a star-studded ensemble, led by Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Raavan, Ravi Dubey as Lakshman, and Sunny Deol as Hanuman. The extended cast includes Amitabh Bachchan, Arun Govil, Lara Dutta, Vivek Oberoi, Kajal Aggarwal, Rakul Preet Singh, Kunal Kapoor, and Sheeba Chaddha, among others.

With Ramayana, Malhotra aims to position Indian storytelling on a truly global platform, aligning with his broader vision of taking the country’s cinematic legacy to international audiences. His remarks highlight both a sense of progress and an acknowledgment of the journey ahead as Indian films continue to expand their global footprint.
