Producer Vikram Malhotra offered one of the most insightful industry observations in his conversation with Bollywood Hungama. “Crime and thrillers are like dal-chawal. Ultimately, you go back to your comfort.”

According to Malhotra, the genre’s endurance lies in its adaptability. “If the characters are engaging and the plot is gripping, you’re in it. Predictability should always be low.” He explained why OTT has amplified the genre’s appeal. “This format lends itself beautifully to episodic storytelling cliffhangers, backtracking, layered arcs.”

Despite saturation concerns, Malhotra remains optimistic. “People say there are too many crime thrillers, but we still can’t get enough of them. That tells you everything.”

With Daldal, he believes the genre is being re-examined rather than repeated proof that crime storytelling still has vast, unexplored emotional territory.
