Apart from the entertainment factor, movies are also eventually the source of current trends. Not only is all the glitz and glamour required to make a movie hit but they come across as the ultimate trend setter. It takes a ton of research and hard work by stylists, look designers, makeup artists and hairdressers to create a look which in future will be an icon of style, a mark of high fashion that will influence the youth but it's also give and take. Fashion influences Bollywood and Bollywood, in turn carries fashion forward!
If we have a countdown on the style and sex-appeal portrayed in Bollywood movies, these movies would definitely bag the prize.
Student of the Year
Student Of The Year, a romantic comedy directed by Karan Johar, starred newbies Sidharth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan speaking only the brand language. Costume designers Manish Malhotra and Shiraz Siddiqui have given the movie a very stylish, modern and rich feel to it. Alia, a typical spoilt rich teen was always seen in hot shorts, miniskirts and body-cons, sporting luxury brands like Manolo, Jimmy Choo, Prada, and Stella McCartney and carries a Birkin and a Dior bag to school on normal days. The diva dons chic Manish Malhotra ensembles to weddings. Her wardrobe is so exquisite that she doesn't have hospital clothes. Just like Alia is to add the dash of glamour, Siddharth and Varun are no less! While Varun an aspiring musician makes his style statement with quirky Mickey Mouse t-shirts, Siddharth's look consists of Quiksilver t-shirts, Ray-Ban aviators, buffs and designer kurtas. While the blue blazer is too classy for a school uniform, even the sports uniforms are by Puma and the triathlon clothes by Fusion.
Meanwhile Rishi Kapoor's gay character dresses in polka dotted or pink ties with not-so-matching shirts, blazers and a koala bear or a crystal-encrusted reptile brooch on his suit's lapel. The character has the luxury to pop open a Burberry umbrella in the sun as well read notes from a Louis Vuitton case or folder.

Kuch Kuch hota hai
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai starring Shahrukh Khan, Kajol, Rani Mukherji and Salman Khan directed and written by Karan Johar was a colorful experience. Though K2H2's fashion is pretty outdated at the moment (within 13 years of its release) it doesn't take away from the fact that costume designer Manish Malhotra had taken everyone's breath away with the movie's style and glamour. Not only bright, young and peppy colors oozed from the film's frame, but the characters displayed too paraded exquisite desi trends flavored with chic western attires.
Rani Mukherjee appeared in colorful tops, miniskirts, hair accessories and shades. Whereas Kajol initially manifested in short hair wearing tom-boyish loose shirt-jackets, dungarees and hair bands but later transformed into a diva with simple saris and flowing locks. As for SRK it was sunny body-hugging tees and leather jackets.
Dil Chahta hai a 2001 modern-day flick, written and directed by Farhan Akhtar, starred Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Preity Zinta, Sonali Kulkarni, and Dimple Kapadia. It was a first for Costume Designer Arjun Bhasin, yet the movie turned out to be uber stylish, a trend setter of western wear and a landmark in creating the urban feel.
A new set of attitudes for the millennium were born with this film wearing its liberalism on its sleeve, flaunting trendy casual wear such as short body-hugging tees, jeans with the devil-may-care attitude and rimless glasses.
A 2008 rom-com by Tarun Mansukhani, Dostana featured Abhishek Bachchan, John Abraham and Priyanka Chopra in the lead. The film was a major influence in creating new fashion trends overall India, but what shocked us is the fact that costume designers Manish Malhotra and Karan Johar haven't used any brands for the movie!
Abhishek's wardrobe is full with bright printed shirts paired with matching stoles and white cargos. The actor displays color blocking with dyed shirts. As for john its colorful tank vests, v-neck tshirts and shorts. (How can we forget the butt revealing hot yellow boxers?). PC dons miniskirts, micro shorts and halter neck bikinis, even her desi avatar consist of saris with cleavage exposing blouses. Whereas the diva's golden swimsuit is a cherry on the cake!
Aisha, another rom com by Rajshree Ojha, casted Sonam Kapoor and Abhay Deol in the lead whereas Cyrus Sahukar, Arunoday Singh, Ira Dubey and Amrita Puri in supporting roles. One of the most stylish movies of its time, Aisha portrayed designer clothes from Chanel, Vivienne Westwood and Christian Lacroix.
Costume designers Pernia Qureshi and Kunal Rawal shopped from New York's streets, thrift stores to the vintage and department stores. Aisha's style statement bag is from Lady Dior whereas the other bits and pieces like the churidar-kurtas are from Anamika Khanna, suits from Kunal Rawal, vintage belts from YSL and watches from Cartier.
