The theatrical trailers of the films are often unveiled to create a desire among the audience to watch a film in the cinema hall. The trailer is in fact the most effective means of communication with the audience, as they make up their mind to watch or not watch a film based on the trailer. The promotions are a secondary factor and seldom does a film with bad trailer opens well at the ticket window owing to a prolonged promotional campaign.
The theatrical trailer of Diljit Dosanjh‘s Soorma was unveiled recently on the digital platform and it has met with a mixed response from the viewers. While a section of the audience felt that it is a fitting tribute to the Indian Hockey Legend – Sandeep Singh, a lot others felt that the theatrical trailer revealed the entire premise of the film. The purpose of a theatrical trailer is to excite the audience and keep them wanting for more. The trailer should often give a glimpse of what the movie has to offer, without giving away the entire plot.
It is essentially meant to keep the audience guessing as to how would the story unfold in the film, but with Soorma, the makers have probably revealed the entire timeline of the film in merely 3 minutes. The trailer throws some light on the lead characters motive to become a hockey player, follows that up with the accident because of which he can no longer represent India in Hockey World Cup and finally, the last few bits of the trailer show the redemption of the character, wherein rises against all odds to emerge victorious.
Although the journey of Sandeep Singh is worth witnessing, the trailer leaves nothing for the audience to explore when they watch the film on the big screen. One might argue that sports films have a similar template in terms of cutting a theatrical trailer, but if we go back to Sultan and Dangal, both the trailers created the desired impact without really giving away the plot.
Basically, the theatrical trailer of Soorma is the perfect example of everything that one shouldn’t be doing with a film trailer. Well, we would love to be surprised but from what we know about Sandeep Singh’s life, the trailer has given us all the information about the noteworthy events of his life. It ain’t a poor trailer; it is just a wrong conceptualization of a trailer that could have left a tremendous impact given the potential of the story.
Directed by Shaad Ali, Soorma is slated to release on July 13, 2018. The movie stars Diljit Dosanjh and Taapsee Pannu in lead
