Earlier this week, India woke to the tragic incident where over 150 people in Kallikurchi district in Tamil Nadu complained of vomiting, diarrhea and other infections. Followed by the diagnosis of people suffering from liquor poisoning, over a 100 people were admitted to the hospitals with the death toll rising up to 47 on Saturday. Upset and angered over this incident, Tamil Cinema superstars Suriya and Thalapathy Vijay have taken to social media to showcase their support to the victims and also holding the government accountable for this incident. In long notes penned by both the actors, the actors have also drawn references to a similar incident that happened a while ago.
Thalapathy Vijay pens note
Thalapathy Vijay, who recently announced his decision to venture into politics, took to X, aka Twitter, to share his disappointment with the government’s attitude of indifference and added, “The news of the death of more than 25 people after consuming fake liquor in Karunapuram area of Kallakurichi district is shocking and heartbreaking. I offer my deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and pray to God for the speedy recovery of those undergoing treatment.” He went on to add, “The fact that such an incident has occurred again shows the indifference of the government administration when it has not yet fully recovered from the tragedy of losing many lives due to the same incident last year. I strongly request that the Tamil Nadu government should take strict precautionary measures to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.”

Suriya, in his note, addresses a similar incident that occurred in Villupuram district
He started the note with comparing it to natural calamities and shared, “50 consecutive deaths in a small town is a tragedy that does not happen even during calamities such as storms, rains and floods. It is alarming that more than a hundred people are still in the hospital. The successive deaths and the cries of the victims are heart-wrenching. It is comforting that the government and administration are acting quickly and struggling to reduce the losses. But this conventional approach of short-term solution to a long-term problem will definitely not work.”
However, he continued, “Last year, 22 people died after drinking poison mixed with methanol in Villupuram district. The government promised to take serious action. Now in the neighboring district people have died in droves after drinking the same poisonous alcohol mixed with methanol and it is very sad that no change has taken place till now. The people of Tamil Nadu, who vote to improve their lives, are constantly watching the plight of the governments that have ruled us for more than twenty years by putting Tasmac and forcing people to drink. 'Alcoholism policy ends up being only an election time slogan for all political parties.”

In another note, he stated, “Governments should immediately stop the violence they have been perpetrating against their own people for years by encouraging alcoholism. Rehabilitation centers should be started in every district to recover the addicts from alcoholism. Just as the government implements visionary action plans for the advancement of students in education, similarly exemplary programs for the rehabilitation of alcoholics should be devised and implemented as a movement. Only if the government and political parties act with foresight, such tragic deaths can be prevented in the future. Along with the people, I hope that the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu will take decisions in the interest of the people on the prohibition policy after passing the short-term solution,” he concluded and signed off by expressing condolences to the families of the deceased.
