The much-talked about film that brought together Tamil superstar Rajinikanth and Malayalam superstar Mammootty in a rare collaboration was this Mani Ratnam film titled Thalapathi. Furthermore, it marked the film debut of one of the most popular actors of current times, Arvind Swamy. This gangster drama that won hearts in 1991, is all set to return to theatres, three decades later, as a tribute to Rajinikanth who will be celebrating his 74th birthday this year in December.

Recent reports have suggested that Thalapathi will be re-releasing in theatres on December 12 to celebrate the joyous occasion of Rajinikanth’s birthday. A movie aficionado named Laxmi Kanth has shared this information on social media wherein he has also pointed out that this will be a great time for fans of the Tamil megastar to recall one of his award-winning works in Tamil Cinema.

Speaking of Thalapathi, the film features a unique and loyal friendship that Surya, a slum dweller shares with the wealthy Devaraj played by Mammotty. Surya is abandoned by his mother Kalyani during birth but he grows up to a vigilante and joins hands with the kind-hearted but powerful gangster Devaraj. Arjun – an honest cop enters the scene and makes several attempts to bring down the syndicate of Devaraj, that is protected by his Thalapathi aka Surya. The film makes several references to the Indian mythological saga of Mahabharat, showcasing the blind friendship, faith, and dedication of Surya towards Devaraj as a representation of the Karna and Duryodhana friendship, Karna and Arjun’s relation as half-brothers born to the same mother, etc.

Apart from them, the film stars Sreevidya as Surya and Arjun’s mother Kalyani, Shobana as Subbulaxmi, Bhanupriya as Padma, Amrish Puri as Kalivarthan, Geetha as Selvi, among many others.
