Raaj Kamal Films announces the re-release of Kamal Haasan starrer silent black comedy Pushpak : Bollywood News

In the time of re-release of some of the biggest blockbusters of South superstars, Ulaganayakan Kamal Haasan starrer the evergreen black comedy drama Pushpak which released with multiple titles for different language-speaking audiences, is all set to rerelease in theatres. The production house Raaj Kamal Films International, fondly referred a RKFI, took to social media to make this announcement about India’s rarest silent black comedy film, also starring an ensemble cast with Amala as the leading lady.

Although they are yet to divulge a date, the announcement on X, formerly known as Twitter, read, “#Pushpak #Pesumpadam, a pioneer in silent black comedy and an iconic masterpiece of Indian cinema, will be re-released in theatres soon.” The film is directed by Singheetham Srinvasa Rao. Speaking of the film, Pushpak revolves around an unemployed graduate who encounters a drunk rich unconscious man and takes over his lifestyle after keeping him as a prisoner. However, he does not realise the dangers he has brought upon himself because a hired killer believes him to be his target.

The film was released on November 27, 1987 with different titles for different linguistic regions. Its original title was in Kannada called Pushpaka Vimana (The Flower Chariot), Pushpaka Vimanam in Telugu, Pesum Padam (Talking Picture) in Tamil, Pushpakvimanam in Malayalam, and Pushpak (Flower) for Hindi-speaking regions.

The film featured a star cast from different parts of the country, and apart from Kamal Haasan and Amala, it also starred Samir Khakhar, Tinu Anand, K. S. Ramesh, Farida Jalal, Pratap Potan, Lokanath, P. L. Narayana and Ramya. Interestingly, the film also doesn’t feature any character names because of its silent nature.

Pushpak received a lot of recognition owing to its experiment of creating a black comedy without dialogues and received rave reviews from critics and art-film lovers.
