A unique and hard-hitting addition to Indian cinema, Jockey has made a notable debut on Amazon Prime Video, quickly finding its place among the platform’s trending titles. Directed by Pragabhal Das, the film is currently featured in the Top 10 list and holds the No. 5 spot in the action category, signaling a strong response from viewers.
Set against the rustic backdrop of Madurai, Jockey explores the intense and lesser-known world of goat fighting — making it the first Indian film to delve into the ancient rural sport. The narrative follows Ramar, played by Yuvan Krishna, and Kapra Karthi, portrayed by Ridhaan Krishnas, two fierce competitors whose rivalry and ambition gradually spiral into a consuming conflict.
The film also features Ammu Abhirami and Madhusudan Rao in pivotal roles, adding depth to the emotionally charged storyline. To ensure authenticity, Pragabhal Das reportedly spent three years researching the goat-fighting community in Madurai, while the lead actors underwent extensive training alongside real-life jockeys to better understand the nuances of the sport.
Sharing his thoughts on the film’s reception, filmmaker Pragabhal Das said, “It is such a pleasure to see that Jockey, with its unique storyline about the sport of goat fighting blended with action, has hit the top 10 list on Amazon Prime and is trending at no. 5 in the action category. Credit to platforms such as Prime Video that open up these nuanced sports to a larger audience in India, where a very localized historical sport can have the same exposure as any mainstream sport today. Myself, Yuvan and Ridhaan worked hard to understand the dynamics of such a sport and spent three years learning goat training.”
He further added, “My fascination with goat fighting, an intrinsic part of Tamil Nadu’s culture, inspired me to make Jockey. I’m glad the film has found a home on Amazon Prime, which also released my debut, Muddy. It’s an honour to have the film featured among the quality Tamil films on the platform, and I’m confident the film’s hard-hitting narrative will resonate with audiences.”
Jockey marks Pragabhal Das’ second directorial venture after Muddy, which explored the world of off-road mud racing. With its grounded storytelling and culturally rooted subject, the latest film continues his exploration of unconventional sports in cinema.
Backed by producer Prema Krishnadas, the film features cinematography by C. Udhayakumar and editing by N. B. Srikanth. The sound design is helmed by National Award winner Rajakrishnan M. R., while Sakthi Balaji has composed the original score.
With its distinctive premise and strong early traction on streaming, Jockey appears to have struck a chord with audiences looking for stories rooted in regional culture yet presented with a cinematic edge.
