Hi Nanna, which released in December 2023, is facing plagiarism charges almost a year after its release. The film, which featured Nani and Mrunal Thakur in lead roles, has come under the scanner as a Kannada filmmaker has accused the makers of plagiarism – an unethical remake of his film, Bheema Sena Nala Maharaja without taking the rights from him. Producer Pushkara Mallikarjunaiah, who has worked in Kannada films like Kirik Party, Jeerjimbe, Avatara Purusha, among others have taken to social media to point out the matter.

The Kannada producer took to his Instagram story where he shared a collage of his film Bheema Sena Nala Maharaja as well as that of Hi Nanna, further penning a note saying, “Without taking remake rights, Hi Nana is been made by our original movie Bheema Sena Nala Maharaja.” Tagging Nani, he added, “What a cheap thing to do”. Meanwhile, the makers have not yet responded to the claims made by the producer.

Directed by Shouryuv, the film also stars Jayaram, Nassar, Angad Bedi, Shilpa Tulaskar, among others and revolves around a fashion photographer Viraj who meets a girl named Yashna, through his daughter Mahi, and ends up narrating his love story with Varsha. Feeling a strange connection with Mahi, Yashna eventually falls in love with Viraj blissfully unaware of his truth. Hi Nanna released in multiple languages and is currently available on Netflix.
