Kamal Haasan calls for cost correction in Indian cinema amid global economic crisis; producers Vyjayanthi Movies and Shibu Thameens back actor’s vision

en Bollywood News Kamal Haasan calls for cost correction in Indian cinema amid global economic crisis; producers Vyjayanthi Movies and Shibu Thameens back actor’s vision

The veteran actor-filmmaker urges the industry to reduce wasteful spending while protecting workers and creative integrity during uncertain economic times.

Veteran actor and filmmaker Kamal Haasan has sparked an important conversation within the Indian film industry after sharing a detailed note on social media addressing the rising economic pressures impacting cinema. Referring to the ongoing crisis in West Asia and its ripple effects on global energy, logistics, and production costs, the actor called for an industry-wide dialogue on sustainable filmmaking practices and responsible budgeting.

In his note, Kamal Haasan wrote, “Dear friends, colleagues, and members of the film fraternity” before addressing the larger economic concerns affecting not just India but the global entertainment ecosystem. He continued, “The continuing crisis in West Asia is deepening and the world is facing growing pressure on energy, trade, logistics, and economic stability. India too is inevitably feeling the impact of rising fuel, energy, logistics, and production costs”.

The actor further pointed out that the film industry is already grappling with escalating budgets and uneven market recovery post-pandemic. “For the Indian film industry, this comes at a time when budgets are already escalating and market recoveries remain uneven. Rising costs will not affect film production alone. Consumer spending patterns for entertainment may also change in the months ahead due to inflationary pressures”, he shared.

Kamal Haasan stressed that any financial correction within the industry should not affect workers and technicians. “Let me be clear. Any correction in cinema economics must never come at the cost of workers' wages, safety, dignity, food, transport, accommodation, or humane working conditions. The burden cannot fall on those who labour the hardest”, Haasan added.

He also criticized unnecessary extravagance in filmmaking, questioning the growing dependence on lavish overseas shoots. The note further read, “The correction we need is elsewhere: in avoidable waste, poor planning, inflated entourage culture, unnecessary foreign travel, production delays, and the growing disconnect between spending and purpose. Why must every love story bloom only in Paris, and every honeymoon end in Switzerland? Romance, fortunately, does not require foreign exchange. Indian cinema, and Indians, deserve a little more confidence in themselves and our beautiful country”.

The actor concluded by urging producers, actors, unions, exhibitors, OTT platforms and studios to come together for a larger conversation on the future of cinema economics.

His statement received strong support from leading producers across industries. Vyjayanthi Movies responded to the note saying, “Incredible man. Incredible words. At a crucial time for the cinema industry, Mr. @ikamalhaasan is among the first to step forward and speak about responsible measures to control costs and protect the future of cinema. Truly appreciate it, sir.”

Vyjayanthi Movies has been associated with several landmark films over the decades, including Kalki 2898 AD, Mahanati and Sarkaru Vaari Paata. The banner is also collaborating with Kamal Haasan on the upcoming high-profile project Kalki 2898 AD Part 2 following his appearance as Supreme Yaskin in the first instalment.

Producer Shibu Thameens also extended support while sharing his own perspective on disciplined filmmaking. He wrote, “It’s need of the hour and allways #ulaganayagan @ikamalhaasan sir Who allways initiate ideas, as well first one to apply innovative techniques in Indian cinema . I think, It’s the script which demands the said , prep/shoot/post/ actors/ technicians / location/ art etc. Hope the discipline will start from script development itself keeping the audience in mind. Let’s congratulate Love today, Tourist family, with love, youth, Thai kizhavi.. and lots of recent small budgeted successful Malayalam films as a model - Sorry, not a statement, just adding my views as a maker, who is learning from few failures”.

Shibu Thameens is known for backing several major South Indian productions and has been associated with projects featuring top stars across Tamil and Malayalam cinema.

Kamal Haasan’s statement has now triggered broader discussions within the film fraternity, especially at a time when rising production costs and changing audience habits continue to reshape the business of cinema across India.
