The much-awaited trailer of Kaantha was unveiled on November 6, offering a dramatic and visually rich peek into a story set in 1950s Madras, where friendships crumble, egos collide, and a sinister mystery begins to unfold. Led by Dulquer Salmaan, Samuthirakani, Bhagyashree Borse, and Rana Daggubati, the film promises an intense period thriller rooted in the early era of Tamil cinema.

The trailer introduces Dulquer Salmaan as a rising star whose life and career are shaped by his mentor, played by Samuthirakani. Their once-unbreakable mentee–mentor bond begins to fracture as fame, money, ego, and power enter the picture. What begins as admiration soon spirals into rivalry, setting the stage for a massive showdown that forms the core conflict of the narrative.
Bhagyashree Borse, who plays Dulquer’s on-screen leading lady and love interest, adds another complex layer to the drama. While her character initially appears deeply in love, the trailer hints at an emotional upheaval as her loyalty becomes questionable. A pivotal moment shows her making a promise to Samuthirakani—who also seems to be her mentor—that she will always act and work according to his vision. This raises questions about her true alliances and the role she plays in the rift between mentor and protégé.
The biggest surprise arrives with the entry of Rana Daggubati, portraying an aggressive, no-nonsense police officer. Rana’s character storms onto the sets of the film-within-the-film, also titled Kaantha, to investigate an unknown crime that threatens to derail everything. His stern presence and commanding screen energy suggest a deep and dangerous mystery lurking behind the glamorous facade of filmmaking.
While the trailer sets up the interpersonal tensions, earlier glimpses revealed that Kaantha draws inspiration from the life of M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, one of Tamil cinema’s earliest superstars. The story revolves around a visionary Tamil director, Ayya, and his strained bond with Chandran, the star he helped create. When Chandran renames their female-focused project from Shaantha to Kaantha—reshaping it to suit his own image—their partnership takes a dark turn.
Co-written and directed by Selvamani Selvaraj, Kaantha is jointly produced by Rana Daggubati’s Spirit Media and Dulquer Salmaan’s Wayfarer Films. With its rich period detailing, powerful performances, and a gripping story of ambition and betrayal, the film is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing Tamil dramas of the year.
