Dulquer Salmaan has been formally issued a notice by the Pathanamthitta Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in Kerala in connection with a complaint arising from alleged food poisoning traced to a rice product he promotes.
According to the complaint filed by caterer PN Jayarajan from Vallikode in Pathanamthitta district, a 50 kg bag of “Rose Brand Biryani Rice” bought for a wedding on 24 August 2025 did not display any packing or expiry date. The petition further alleges that guests who consumed biryani made using this rice “later suffered from food poisoning”.
In the proceedings, the managing director of Rose Brand Biryani Rice is named as the first accused, the manager of the retail shop (Malabar Biryani & Spices) from which the rice was purchased is named second, and Dulquer Salmaan is listed as the third accused. The commission has directed all three to appear before it on 3 December 2025.
The petitioner is seeking a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for damages, Rs 10,250 for the cost of the rice, along with court expenses. In his complaint, the caterer stated that he chose the brand after being influenced by the actor’s promotional campaigns, “he decided to buy the rice because of the brand’s advertisements featuring Dulquer Salmaan, whose endorsement influenced his purchase decision.”
While Dulquer Salmaan has not publicly commented on the matter as yet, the case spotlights the role and legal exposure of celebrity endorsers when consumer-product safety or labelling lapses are alleged. It emphasises the need for brands to ensure compliance with food-safety norms and transparent labelling, especially when a public figure lends their image to a product.
As the hearing date approaches, the outcome may set precedent for how endorsement liability is treated in consumer-safety cases in India.
