TN CM MK Stalin felicitated Kartiki Gonsalves, director of the Oscar-winning documentary The Elephant Whisperers, with a cheque of Rs. 1 crore.

The Tamil-language short documentary titled The Elephant Whisperers created history on March 12 as it became the first Indian production to lift an Oscar trophy. A week after, the filmmaker returned to India, earlier on Tuesday morning. Soon after she arrived in Chennai, Kartiki visited the Secretariat’s office to meet the Chief Minister of the state, M.K Stalin. The honourable CM felicitated the filmmaker with a cheque of Rs. 1 crore as an incentive.

Giving a peek into their meeting, the CM took to his Twitter handle and shared two photos. His tweet, written in Tamil, read, “I appreciated the director @earthspectrum

#TheElephantWhisperers ) who grew up in Ooty and took the elephant conservation efforts of our Tamil Nadu government up to #AcademyAwards and gave Rs.1 crore as incentive. Appreciation for making the work of many people unknown to the world with his work!”

Speaking of the win, during her acceptance speech at the 95th Academy Awards, Gonsalves had said, “I stand here today to speak on the sacred bond between us and our natural world. For the respect of indigenous communities. For entities towards other living beings, we share our space with. And finally for co-existence.”

Not only Kartiki, but CM also met the caretaker couple Bomman and Bellie, who are also the focus of the documentary along with young elephants Raghu and Ammu, a week ago. He announced Rs 1 lakh each from CM Relief Fund for all 91 elephant caretakers in the 2 camps in the state, as a token of appreciation.
