Kannada director K Ramnarayan on Thursday, May 8, stated that singer Sonu Nigam’s apology wasn’t sufficient and that he should face consequences for his harsh remarks. Ramnarayan also revealed that he had replaced two songs sung by Sonu in his upcoming film Kuladalli Keelyavudo with track versions.
The director told PTI, “Just saying sorry will not cut it. Connecting Kannada pride to the national tragedy that happened in Pahalgam is a very grave mistake. He must pay a price for that.”
The director further added that his upcoming film Kuladalli Keelyavudo is slated for a theatrical release on May 23. As part of its promotion, three songs have been released so far, two of which were originally sung by Sonu Nigam.
Ramnarayan said, “In fact, he sang the title track, which is a tribute to possibly the most famous Kannada song, featured in legendary actor Rajkumar’s 1965 film, Satya Harishchandra. The original Kuladalli Keelyavudo is so sacred for the Kannada film industry – our orchestra, while recording songs, ends by playing this song. How can this song be sung by someone like Nigam, who thinks so lowly of us?”
The director stated that both tracks sung by Sonu Nigam, including Manasu Haadtade, are being replaced with versions recorded by the track singers. In music production, a ‘track singer’ refers to a singer who initially records a vocal performance for a song, often as a demo.
Although the makers of Kuladalli Keelyavudo have taken the song down from YouTube, Sonu Nigam’s version of Manasu Haadtade remains available on his personal channel.
At the Bengaluru concert, Sonu Nigam shut down a student's repeated requests to sing in Kannada and allegedly linked it to the Pahalgam terror attack. He found the person's tone to be rude and said, “I had started singing Kannada songs even before he was born. This is why the Pahalgam attack happened... for such a kind of attitude. At least see who is in front of you before making such demands.”
The singer later issued an apology following the Bengaluru concert row. He shared a post on his Instagram, stating that his love for Karnataka is bigger than his ego.
