In a recent interview with Ranveer Allahbadia, superstar Chiyaan Vikram provided a rare glimpse into his personal life, particularly his relationship with his wife, Shailaja.
Vikram candidly spoke about their interfaith relationship, noting the societal challenges they faced at the time. “She’s Malayali, and I’m Tamil... it was considered taboo to even talk to a girl, let alone someone from a different faith," he recalled. Yet, their bond only grew stronger, overcoming the cultural barriers that might have otherwise kept them apart.
Embracing an interfaith marriage
Vikram’s marriage to Shailaja reflects not just love but also acceptance of their cultural and religious differences. He is half Hindu and half Christian, while Shailaja is a Malayali. At the time, interfaith marriages were not as widely accepted, making their union unconventional.
In the interview, Vikram expressed his gratitude for having Shailaja by his side throughout the years. “I’m glad I met her, and I’m glad she’s there,” he said, reflecting on their journey together. He emphasized how these differences have never posed a problem in their relationship and credited Shailaja for being a constant source of support and strength.
A lifelong bond beyond differences
Over time, Vikram and Shailaja’s relationship has grown stronger as they embraced each other’s quirks and differences. The actor spoke humorously about how he enjoys dressing flamboyantly, a habit Shailaja sometimes questions. However, these differences have never diminished their bond; instead, they have learned to complement each other. “You don’t think of it as a habit, but you become so used to the other person that you can’t be without them,” Vikram shared.
Parenting together: Raising Akshita and Dhruv
Vikram and Shailaja are also proud parents to two children, Akshita and Dhruv. While Akshita has chosen a more private life, Dhruv has followed in his father’s footsteps, carving out his path in the film industry. Vikram takes pride in Dhruv’s accomplishments and is supportive of his journey as an actor.
Reflecting on their family life, Vikram credits Shailaja for being not just a wonderful wife but also a great mother to their children. "She’s always been that source of support," he said.
