Chiyaan Vikram, known for his intense and transformative roles, has described his upcoming film Thangalaan as the most challenging project of his career. During a promotional event in Bengaluru, Vikram spoke candidly about the difficulties he faced while working on the film. “I’ve played many unique roles in films like Anniyan and Pithamagan, but Thangalaan is a standout,” he shared. “This is the most difficult film of my career. We encountered numerous challenges in every scene, including injuries during the shoot. Even the romantic scenes were tough.”
Chiyaan Vikram calls Thangalaan the most challenging film of his career: “The real challenge was portraying….”Portraying unfamiliar characters from the British Colonial Era
Vikram elaborated on the unique challenges of Thangalaan, which is set during the British colonial era and revolves around indigenous tribes. “The real challenge was portraying characters from a time and culture we didn’t fully understand. We had to embody them, not just act like them. It felt like we were transported back a century,” Vikram explained. To prepare for the role, the actor underwent six months of rigorous training and significantly reduced his weight. However, he emphasized that the psychological demands of the role were even more taxing than the physical transformation, with daily filming requiring four to five hours of makeup.
Inspiration from Kantara
Vikram also highlighted the influence of the film Kantara, directed by and starring Rishab Shetty, on the production of Thangalaan. He acknowledged Kantara for demonstrating that compelling content can reach a global audience. “That film showed us that good content can reach any corner of the world,” Vikram said, praising Kantara for its international success and reach.
Director Pa. Ranjith on the historical context of Thangalaan
Director Pa. Ranjith added depth to the conversation by distinguishing Thangalaan from other historical films like KGF. He explained that while KGF focused on a single character, Thangalaan is about an entire community from a century ago. “During the Mysore state period, diverse people inhabited the KGF area. The film also examines the aftermath of discovering gold, along with colonialism and societal inequalities that affected the community,” Ranjith elaborated.
Anticipation builds for Thangalaan’s release
Set to release worldwide on August 15, 2024, Thangalaan promises to be another cinematic spectacle from the South Indian film industry. The film, starring Chiyaan Vikram and Malavika Mohanan, will be available in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam. The film’s music is composed by G.V. Prakash Kumar.
