The popularity of pickleball in India continued to grow as the World Pickleball League (WPL) and the Bengaluru Jawans franchise, in collaboration with the Karnataka State Pickleball Association (KSPA), announced the Bengaluru Open 2025. This marked the third official stop on the inaugural WPL Tour, bringing the sport to the spotlight in southern India.
Set to take place over three days, the tournament welcomed players, fans, and sports enthusiasts for a vibrant celebration of competition, inclusivity, and community engagement.
About the WPL and Bengaluru Jawans
Founded by Arjuna Awardee Gaurav Natekar and Arati Ponnappa Natekar, the World Pickleball League is India’s first professional platform for the sport. The league aims to give pickleball the recognition it enjoys globally and create a strong presence in India’s sporting ecosystem.
The Bengaluru Jawans, reigning champions of WPL Season 1, hosted the Bengaluru Open 2025. The franchise is co-owned by filmmaker Atlee, his wife Priya Atlee, and Muhammad Jameel, Founder and CEO of NJ Macson.
Known for his success in the film industry, Atlee extended his passion for storytelling into the world of sports. His involvement with Bengaluru Jawans reflected his dedication to promoting grassroots sports and encouraging youth participation across India.
Bengaluru Open 2025 Highlights
The Bengaluru Open 2025 featured: Participation from over 250 players across India and international locations. More than 500 matches conducted across various categories. Inclusive formats for all age groups, from juniors to veterans (50+). The event officially opened with the presence of WPL founders, Bengaluru Jawans' co-owners, and senior representatives from the Karnataka State Pickleball Association.
With competitive matches, a festive atmosphere, and strong community support, the Bengaluru Open 2025 showcased the potential of pickleball as a growing sport in India. The event stood as a testament to the efforts of the WPL and the Bengaluru Jawans in taking pickleball to new heights — with Atlee’s involvement adding star power and vision to the movement.
