Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister and actor Pawan Kalyan has achieved a rare international distinction with his induction into Kenjutsu, one of Japan’s most revered classical sword arts. The recognition marks over three decades of disciplined training, research, and commitment to martial arts, particularly Japanese self-defence systems rooted in samurai philosophy.

Widely known for his influential career in Indian cinema, Pawan Kalyan has consistently worn multiple creative hats as an actor, writer, director, stunt coordinator, choreographer, and singer. Parallel to his artistic journey, he has also built a strong identity in public life, currently serving as the Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, where he is regarded as a people-centric leader.
Martial arts, however, have remained a lifelong discipline for him. His early training began in Chennai, where he pursued karate and related combat forms with rigour and technical precision. Over the years, his practice evolved beyond physical conditioning into a deeper engagement with the philosophy of Japanese martial traditions, which emphasise discipline, humility, self-control, and respect.
This long-standing dedication culminated in his formal induction into Kenjutsu, a classical Japanese sword art traditionally preserved within select lineages. His journey and training were recently shared through a video released by Pawan Kalyan Creative Works, offering a glimpse into the discipline and inspiration behind his martial arts practice.
Pawan Kalyan’s understanding of combat arts has also reflected in his on-screen work. Films such as Thammudu, Kushi, Annavaram, OG, and others featured authentic martial techniques, contributing to wider awareness and appreciation of these art forms among mainstream audiences.
In recognition of his sustained commitment, several international martial arts bodies have honoured him over the years. Japan’s respected traditional martial institution Sogo Budo Kanri Kai awarded him the Fifth Dan rank, while he became the first Telugu individual to be inducted into the Takeda Shingen Clan under Soke Muramatsu Sensei—an honour rarely extended beyond Japan.
Further acknowledging his contributions, the Golden Dragons organisation conferred upon him the title Tiger of Martial Arts. His advanced training was conducted under Hanshi Professor Dr. Siddiq Mahmoodi, one of India’s foremost authorities on Japanese martial arts. Under his guidance, Pawan Kalyan trained extensively in Kendo, gaining both technical mastery and philosophical insight into the way of the sword.
Through this milestone, Pawan Kalyan has carved a unique space for himself among a select few Indian personalities who have successfully bridged cinema, classical martial arts, and warrior philosophy on an international platform.
