The Malayalam film industry has been rocked by a series of disturbing allegations of sexual harassment and assault. The recent revelation of a young male actor accusing filmmaker Ranjith of sexual assault has further intensified the ongoing controversy that erupted following the release of the Hema Committee report.
As per ANI, the Hema Committee report, established by the Kerala government in the wake of the 2017 actress assault case, shed light on a pervasive culture of sexual exploitation within the Malayalam film industry. The report's findings, which detailed harrowing accounts of harassment and abuse faced by women in the industry, sent shockwaves through the state.
Ranjith, a prominent figure in Malayalam cinema, found himself at the center of the storm when the young male actor came forward with his allegations. According to the victim, he was lured to a hotel in Bangalore under the pretext of an audition, only to be subjected to a horrifying ordeal. The actor claimed that Ranjith forced him to strip naked and proceeded to assault him. The incident, which left the victim deeply traumatized, has ignited widespread outrage and calls for justice.
The victim has filed a complaint with the police. The Kerala Police has taken cognizance of the allegations and is investigating the matter. The allegations against Ranjith are not isolated incidents. Several other women actors have come forward with their own stories of harassment and abuse, implicating well-known figures in the industry.
The Hema Committee report has played a crucial role in bringing these issues to light. The panel, comprising Justice K. Hema, veteran actress Sarada, and retired IAS officer K.B. Valsala Kumari, conducted a thorough investigation into the atrocities faced by women in the Malayalam film industry. Their findings have been instrumental in sparking public discourse and demanding accountability.
However, the Kerala government has faced criticism for its perceived lack of urgency in addressing the issues raised in the report. Critics have accused the government of attempting to protect powerful individuals within the film industry, rather than taking decisive action to prevent future incidents.
