TWICE is READY TO BE experimental force with new elements of artistry – Album Review

en Bollywood News TWICE is READY TO BE experimental force with new elements of artistry – Album Review

TWICE released their 12th mini-album on March 10, 2023.

Each comeback by female K-pop powerhouse TWICE has never failed to amaze the fans. Despite speaking about love and emotions related to it with every song, TWICE has always found a way to articulate the feelings in a mind-blowing manner. After a bubbly take on love with their previous EP Between 1&2, the group is ready to take a bold shot at romantic emotion with their new music. TWICE released their 12th mini-album Ready To Be on March 10, 2023, with the title track ‘Set Me Free’ and the pre-release single ‘Moonlight Sunrise’.

The seven-track album opens with the title track ‘Set Me Free’ is a retro disco number. The climactic ascension of the music as each member joins to sing is just right to get the listener in a groove. The song is a heady mix of bass guitar with percussions which only heightens the emotions as the members croon, “Get to the bottom of my heart / You just need to hold on to me / Come and sеt me, set me, sеt me free.”

No TWICE comeback is complete without a touch of fantasy. ‘Moonlight Sunrise’ rushes to complete the set. This track is rife with synth bass beats with a hint of a futuristic feel to it. Trust TWICE to bring in ideas like moonlight and sunrise together to make a bold confession of love when they sing, “Moonlight sunrise/Baby, let's do it all night/Moonlight sunrise/I guarantee I got ya”.

After making a bold confession of love with ‘Set Me Free’, TWICE moves to an edgier feel with ‘Got The Thrills’. A song is a dance number through and through with a stunning beat drop. The electric feel to the song is only accentuated with powerful lyrics – “I don't know if it's absurd, babe/My little strange feelings / It's different from yesterday / Hey, there's no stoppin' me / Show them, baby, how we groovin'”. Following closely is ‘Blame It On Me’. This alt-rock number is an unabashed proclamation of one’s electrified feelings and also a warning sign as the members sing,“Gеstures, aura, and my charms/All day, I'm out of my mind / Don’t you cry about me, baby/Don't blame it on me, yeah”. The song sits with the likes of ‘I See Red’ by Everybody Loves an Outlaw. It is co-written by Dahyun.

Imagine being a wallflower and a TWICE track plays to entice you to break out of your shell. That is what the fifth track ‘Wallflower’ is all about. The members take turns and beckon the lover who’s been sitting on the sidelines – “Wallflower / Your second hand that already responds quickly / Somethin'' about tonight feels meant to be / Dance with me, dance with me”. The song has a smooth tropical feel to the song which makes it a perfect track for a cozy campfire or a house party.

Dahyun participated in songwriting for the penultimate track ‘Crazy Stupid Love’. If one was to articulate a frustrated sigh because of a disloyal lover, then this song would be an answer. The song begins with an acoustic guitar strumming, moves on to a cinematic score and progresses into an acapella-like chorus. The members croon, “Will you stop making stupid love like a fool? / I don't understand you, you're always the same / I can't control it, I'm too fickle / Could you please go away?” as they lament the loss and express anger over the utter disregard of their emotions. The album comes to a stunning conclusion with an English version of the title track ‘Set Me Free’.

TWICE has come a long way from the bubblegum pop genre which the group was synonymous with. Since the past year, the group has been breaking out of its shell, both musically and lyrically. The lyrics are getting bolder and edgier with each comeback and Ready To Be is the right proof of it, especially the track ‘Moonlight Sunrise’ which has ample innuendos. The music is no longer just dance pop but there is a variation with each track. TWICE’s singing in English is growing polished with each comeback. After the success of their first English-language single ‘The Feels’ the group has become more confident in its multilingual capabilities. TWICE’s 12th EP broke their record and sold 500,000 copies. The pre-orders alone surpassed 1.7 million orders. Ready To Be is not just a story about a romantic confession but it is also TWICE’s proclamation to the world that the girls are ready to be much more edgier, bold and groundbreaking. The album is cohesive, experimental and showcases how the next step for TWICE is to be as authentic as possible with their artistry.
