With Wuthering Heights bringing a fresh cinematic lens to Emily Brontë’s classic novel, actor Shazad Latif steps into the role of Edgar Linton in director Emerald Fennell’s latest period romantic drama. Starring alongside Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi as Cathy and Heathcliff, Latif offers a layered take on a character often seen as secondary in past adaptations.

Interestingly, Latif’s connection to the story predates the film. “I hadn’t read the novel. In school, we did Brontës stuff, but not Wuthering Heights. But I was very aware of the story. Wuthering Heights was one of the only VHS tapes that my Nan had on her. She had a little stand and there was about seven VHS tapes—El Cid; Now, Voyager; Once Upon a Time in America; all old school movies. And then Wuthering Heights, which I would watch over and over, the Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon version. So it was funny how that movie came back into my life”.
Speaking about joining the project, he recalled, “I heard somewhere that Emerald Fennell's doing Wuthering Heights, and I was like, excuse me? And they were like, go and meet her… I was very nervous, but Emerald was just great… and it went well and then it happened to go my way, so it was just such good luck”.
Latif views Edgar as more than a rival. “Edgar Linton's a velvet silk merchant… Edgar's actually, in my eyes, a sort of heroic character of the story, as he's an evolved man, a very evolved character. You know, get rid of the jealousy and this guy's a spiritual genius,” he shared laughingly. On Edgar’s dynamic with Cathy, he explained, “If she's 90 percent wildness, he's 90 percent security and safety… He does love her, there is a real love there… It just happens to be that the love she has for Heathcliff is unstoppable”. Reflecting on working with Robbie, Latif said, “Margot is one of the greatest human beings I've ever met… Margot's got such range and can just do anything on cue. It was so amazing to watch. And she's just a pleasure to work with”.
From elaborate production design at Thrushcross Grange to complex character relationships, Latif’s portrayal signals a reinterpretation of Edgar—one grounded in vulnerability, ambition, and quiet heartbreak within Fennell’s sweeping retelling.
