Sex Education star Emma Mackey recently confirmed that she will not be returning for the hit Netflix series’ season 5. Mackey famously starred as Maeve Wiley in the Netflix show since its first season, which aired in 2019. The show’s third season aired in 2021 and confirmed a fourth season shortly after. As reported by Insider, Mackey won the Rising Star award at the 2023 BAFTAs Sunday.
After her win, when the press asked whether she'll be back for "Sex Education" season five, Mackey replied, "Season five of 'Sex Education?' Bloody hell, I've just finished the fourth one, love — last week! No, I don't think so. I've said goodbye to Maeve. So it's a happy goodbye."
The news comes after she previously told Radio Times that she is “not in [season four] as consistently” as other seasons adding, “But we’re in the middle of filming now, and I’m excited to be back. And yeah, I’m intrigued to know what’s going to happen – because I also don’t know. I’m also finding out as we go along, so it’ll be fun.”
Mackey is the second regular cast member to leave the show. Previously it was reported that Ncuti Gatwa, who portrayed Eric Effiong, is also leaving the show after season four. The actor is geaing up for his role as the 15th Doctor in Doctor Who. “Last day. Last time. Bye bubs, thank you for all the lessons and for all the strength,” Gatwa wrote in the caption of a post announcing the news.
Returning cast for season 4 include Gatwa and Mackey alongside Asa Butterfield, Gillian Anderson, Aimee-Lou Wood, Connor Swindells, Kedar Williams-Stirling, Mimi Keene, George Robinson, Chinenye Ezeudu, Dua Saleh, Alistair Petrie and Samantha Spiro.
Meanwhile, Mackey will next be seen in Greta Gerwig's Barbie alongside Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and Simu Liu.
