We have all, growing up, created a world in which everything — from the places we loved and even the people we called our friends — was only real inside of our minds. The friends in our minds were fiercely loyal, unrivaled in their adoration and ultimately, some of the most genuine friendships. IF is about a girl who discovers that she can see everyone’s imaginary friends — and what she does with that superpower — as she embarks on a magical adventure to reconnect forgotten IFs with their kids.
While Ryan Reynolds prepares for the release of his upcoming animation film IF that explores stories of kids’ Imaginary Friends (IFs), he tells us why he thinks these friends exist, he says make-believe is a form of resilience.
He said, “The concept of imaginary friends is provocative and interesting. IFs are usually created out of necessity. It’s an adaptive coping mechanism for kids who realize that they can’t rely exclusively on their parents for a sense of well-being. They have to find other ways to manage. They seek it by creating their own imaginary friends.”
Directed by John Krasinski, Imaginary Friends (IF) stars Ryan Reynolds, Cailey Fleming, and Fiona Shaw with voices from Blake Lively, Steve Carell, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Louis Gossett Jr. alongside many more as the wonderfully unique characters that reflect the incredible power of a child’s imagination.
IF arrives in theaters on May 17, 2024.
