Rihanna reveals how The Smurfs movie is a part of her kids’ childhood; says, “They will definitely be fans”

The musician and global star also revealed that she shares an intriguing childhood connection to Smurfette.

The beloved blue crew is set to return to the big screen in 2025 with The Smurfs, one of the most iconic animated franchises making a grand comeback. Known for its rich comic book legacy and global popularity through television and previous films, The Smurfs has been a cherished part of childhoods across generations. Now, the franchise is ready to captivate a new era of fans with a fresh animated adventure filled with magic, heart, and nostalgia. A major highlight of the film is the casting of global music superstar Rihanna as the voice of Smurfette.

Sharing her deep connection to the character and the franchise, Rihanna opened up about how The Smurfs was a significant part of her childhood. “So many mornings, I woke up long before I was supposed to get ready for school just to get that dose of Smurfs,” she recalled.

Speaking about why she resonated with Smurfette, Rihanna added, “I related so much to Smurfette and what she stood for. First of all, I have always loved makeup and hair. We all know that. And she’s an aesthetician. She’s also a powerful leader, independent, strong, beautiful, sassy, witty and very empathetic. I was super-inspired by all of that. I think she loves music too and her favourite genres are hip-hop, reggae, Afrobeats, ballads and house. That’s Smurfette. She needs options.”

What makes this project even more special for Rihanna is the opportunity to share it with her children. “It reminds me so much of my childhood. And now this is going to be a part of not just my childhood, but my kids’ childhoods as well. They will definitely be fans. I’m looking forward to going to the premiere with them and seeing the surprise on their faces when they hear my voice come out of Smurfette! It’s really cool to see this come full circle.”

In The Smurfs, Papa Smurf (voiced by John Goodman) is mysteriously captured by evil wizards Razamel and Gargamel. Smurfette, voiced by Rihanna, leads the Smurfs on a daring mission into the real world to save him. Along the way, the Smurfs meet new allies and face exciting challenges that push them to redefine their destiny.

The film will release in theaters on July 18, 2025, in English and Hindi.
