As anticipation builds for Avatar: Fire and Ash, slated for a worldwide theatrical release on December 19, acclaimed filmmaker Sukumar has shared a deeply personal response to James Cameron’s latest return to Pandora. Known for grounding spectacle in emotion through films like Pushpa, Sukumar described the experience as both overwhelming and instructive, especially from a storyteller’s point of view.

In a video shared by the film’s Indian distributors, Sukumar reflected on the sheer difficulty of crafting meaningful science fiction. “Telling a story so powerfully in science fiction is extremely difficult,” he said, setting the tone for a candid appreciation of Cameron’s craft. Drawing an analogy that resonated widely, he added, “James Cameron, he is from Pandora. For directors, he is an Avatar, we are just humans.”

Sukumar emphasised that Avatar: Fire and Ash isn’t driven by scale alone. What stood out to him was the emotional continuity flowing through its characters and world. “It has as much emotion as a Telugu film. Every frame has so much emotion,” he noted, pointing to characters like Jake, Neytiri, Varang and Spider as anchors of that emotional experience. According to him, the connection was so immersive that the film’s runtime ceased to matter. “Three hours and seventeen minutes just flew away. I watched it alone, but didn’t feel alone. I felt like I had gone to Pandora.”
The filmmaker also underlined the importance of the theatrical experience, insisting that Cameron’s vision demands a big screen. “We cannot watch James Cameron movies on TV. The visuals won’t be sufficient unless it’s such a big screen,” Sukumar said, calling the film “a wonderful feast for the theatre.” He described moments that moved him to tears, reinforcing his belief that cinema, at its best, is meant to be experienced collectively and immersively.
Avatar: Fire and Ash marks the third instalment in the Avatar franchise, following Avatar: The Way of Water (2022). Directed by James Cameron, the film is co-written by Cameron along with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, based on a story developed with Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno. It is produced by Lightstorm Entertainment and distributed by 20th Century Studios.
With its release just days away, Sukumar’s remarks add to the growing sense that Avatar: Fire and Ash aims not only to push technological boundaries, but to reaffirm the emotional power of cinema when experienced the way it was meant to be—inside a theatre.
