Production on Prime Video’s highly anticipated live-action adaptation of God of War is officially underway. To mark the occasion, Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios have unveiled the first-look image featuring Ryan Hurst as Kratos and Callum Vinson as Atreus. The image offers fans an early glimpse of the iconic father-son duo from the globally popular PlayStation video game franchise.
The series, titled God of War, is being co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions. The project has already secured a two-season order, underlining the confidence in the adaptation of the mythology-inspired action saga.
Based on the acclaimed game series, the storyline follows Kratos and his son Atreus as they embark on a deeply personal journey to scatter the ashes of Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, Faye. Along the way, the narrative explores the evolving relationship between the two — with Kratos attempting to guide his son toward becoming a better god, while Atreus challenges his father to embrace his humanity.
The ensemble cast also features Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri, and Danny Woodburn as Brok.
The series is helmed by Ronald D. Moore, who serves as showrunner, executive producer, and writer. Moore is known for his work on Battlestar Galactica and Outlander. The executive production team includes Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia, and Ben McGinnis serve as co-executive producers. Emmy Award-winning director Frederick E.O. Toye is set to direct the first two episodes.
With production now in motion and a first look unveiled, the God of War series is shaping up to be one of Prime Video’s most ambitious adaptations to date.
