Sir Michael Gambon, the British-Irish actor best known for playing Albus Dumbledore in six of the eight Harry Potter films, has died at the age of 82. His family announced the news on Thursday, saying that he died peacefully in hospital after a bout of pneumonia.

A statement on behalf of his wife, Lady Gambon, and son, Fergus, issued by publicist Clair Dobbs, said, “We are devastated to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon. Beloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of pneumonia. Michael was 82. We ask that you respect our privacy at this painful time and thank you for your messages of support and love.”
Gambon had a long and illustrious career in theatre, film, radio, and television. He won four television BAFTAs and an Olivier Award for his work. In addition to his role as Dumbledore, he is also known for his performances in Maigret, The Singing Detective, The Casual Vacancy, The Norman Conquests, The Life of Galileo, Henry IV, The King's Speech, and Gosford Park.
Gambon was knighted in 1998 for his contribution to the entertainment industry. He is survived by his wife, Anne, and son, Fergus.
Tributes have begun to pour in from the film and theatre world following the news of Gambon's death.
